COSMETOLOGY VISITS THE MOOREHEAD HOUSE
(November 30, 2007) . . .The cosmetology students of the Indiana County Technology Center are busy building up crucial cosmetology hours, working experiences, and community service hours. On Tuesday, October 9 th, the cosmetology students visited the Moorehead House assisted living facility in Indiana to treat the residents to spa services. These treatments included: basic facials, paraffin hand treatments and manicures, pedicures and exfoliation massages.
The event, which is held regularly, is mutually beneficial for the students and the residents. This special experience helps to foster the development of important “soft” skills needed for a public service occupation – and provides a welcome treat for the residents. The residents enjoy the students and the pampering efforts they put into the program. The girls gain communication skills with the residents and grow comfortable with what they should expect in cosmetology.
“I thought it was a great field trip. It was good to see how happy the residents were and having someone new to talk to,” says third year student, Laura Pittman, 12 th grade, of Homer Center.
The cosmetology students plan special events such as this community outreach activity, along with operating the school salon, selling salon-related items as fundraisers, hosting special events at the ICTC and participating in local community and business events. It is during these times, students can put their theory into practice by communicating with people of all ages. These experiences help the students to reach their personal and professional goals.
The cosmetology field combines talent, art, science, and business, leading to a choice of rewarding careers. The ICTC cosmetology program offers all licensing requirements of the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology. Cosmetology students study anatomy, cosmetic chemistry, bacteriology, and sanitation. Students learn the professional hair, skin, and nail procedures.
All areas of this licensed profession are taught for a successful transition to the cosmetology field.
The cosmetology program prepares students for the Pennsylvania state board exams and provides a foundation for further training in business management, education, advanced aesthetics and nail technology. Enrolled students have the opportunity to earn the required 1,250 hours to attain a professional cosmetology license.
