WELDING TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS COMPETE
(December 10, 2010)...If you ask a student what they do in Welding Technology they may say, “all we do is weld and weld some more”, but here at the Indiana County Technology Center we know there is more to Welding Technology. Three seniors in the Welding Technology program area at the ICTC recently competed in the 29th Annual American Welding Society’s (AWS) Student Weld-off at the Boilermaker Training Center, in Pittsburgh. Kyle Fabin, Anders Felton, and Stephen Pribesh were accompanied by their instructor Mr. James Allshouse to compete in the weld-off. Students were required to complete the D1.1 AWS test. This is their code test for structural steel. They competed against 40 other students in the western Pennsylvania region.
If the students are successful, they can each gain an American Welding Society, industry recognized certification in both vertical and overhead positions on grooved plate. Additionally, if any of the students finish in the top three positions, they will be eligible for monetary prizes. The results from that competition will not be available until April 2011, at the AWS Student Day, in Pittsburgh.
