RCEP INITIATIVES
(Regional Career Education Partnerships)
Connecting Today’s Youth to the Careers of Tomorrow
The Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and the Pennsylvania
Department of Labor & Industry have made available grant monies
to help extend the Commonwealth’s high school reform and career
preparation strategies.
Specifically, the WIB & Labor & Industry look for experienced
local organizations to serve as partners that will have the responsibility
(1) to promote career preparation for students; (2) to partner with
Project 720 high schools to address key career-related elements
of the reform agenda; and (3) to work with the Commonwealth on broad
strategies that encourage employers to support Pennsylvania’s
vision for high school reform.
Intermediaries, such as ABEL, connect the classroom to the workplace
and employers to schools and local communities. Intermediaries bring
the right people together to make a difference. Four Strategic Intermediary
Functions are critical to successful, sustainable community efforts
to improve opportunities for young people. These functions are:
- Convene: Bring key leaders together and provide a forum for
dialogue and decision-making about joint efforts.
- Connect: Perform key, day-to-day, operational functions in
their communities. Broker services to key sets of community partners.
- Measure: Collect data and evaluate the impacts of their efforts.
Encourage adjustments in strategies and activities.
- Sustain: Promote policies that strengthen connections of schools
with workplaces and other community resources.
PROGRAM GOALS
- Help Pennsylvania youth (and their parents) make informed choices
about education and training needed to pursue careers in high-demand,
high-growth industries.
- Help expand employer support for career awareness activities
such as: job shadowing, mentoring, internships, etc.
- Strengthen the Commonwealth’s Project 720 high school
reform strategy.
